Happy Anniversary!!!

Just wanted to tell Doug and Shauna "Happy Anniversary"!!!! How I wish I could be wearing that beautiful "pink parachute" dress....What memories we have! I just remember driving around like crazy with poor baby Audrey looking like an orphan....trying to decorate your hotel room and not staying on track with Shauna's minute by minute schedule!!! We actually put warm water in the bathtub thinking it would still be warm 10 hours later!!??We were soo late for pictures and Shauna was going to kill us!!! Oh the stories Jaden will hear about the infamous "watermelon wedding"!!! I wish you didn't live soo far away and we could see you more often. See you guys soon and have a great day!!

Life as a Kindergartner

Today I spent the morning at a kindergartner carnival at Lake Forest Elementary school. I spent a couple of months with these kids at the beginning of the year through a program called Junior Achievement. I would go once a week for 5 weeks to teach the kids about money, saving money, earning money and how to work together as a group. I loved it and was so sad on my last day. They asked me to come back on June 20th for their end of the year carnival. I told them that I would and you should of seen the expressions on their faces when I walked in their classroom this morning. "Miss Hudson is here!!!" I was in charge of the face painting station. Luckily they had some stencils that I could use because I am no artist! They had a ton of different stations for them to go to: bean bag toss, water gun shoot out, bubbles, gymnastics, balloon races, throwing balls through hoops, bowling, etc. One of the little boys in the class, Liam, had his dad come to draw pictures for the kids. He is the person that draws Sponge Bob Square Pants and a bunch of other characters! It was really neat watching him draw all the different pictures for the kids! We had a picnic on the front lawn after the carnival and then it was time to say good-bye. It was sad, but they kept on reminding me that now they will be First Graders!!!! Those kids are soo cute and I keep asking myself as much as I love kids, why I work at a bank instead of with kids!!???

I took the rest of the day off and Heather and I spent the day at the Montage Beach. It was such a beautiful day!! I even went in the water...which was freezing but felt soo good!!! There were these people there who looked like John Mayer and Jessica Simpson! Heather really thougth it was them...they guys totally looked like him, but the girl, not so much once she was laying out...if you know what I mean!!! After we went and got pedicures at Happy Nails. We always laugh when we go because all Heather gets is her toes painted and that's it! I do the works....extra massage, exfoliation, flower!! We always say that when they start talking in their "language" they are saying how lucky the girl that got me is and how mad the girl that got Heather is!!!!

Is it July 3rd yet?

I can't wait for July 3rd.......that is when Lisa, Shauna, Doug, Audrey, Carter & Jaden will be here. Lisa and the kids are staying until the 31st. Shauna and Jaden are staying until the 24th and Doug will just be here for the first week. Dave isn't coming this time. He is going on the West Coast Trail but he will be missed! The Heyman home becomes complete chaos for the month. Trying to find rooms for everyone to sleep and most importantly where to put all the suitcases and stuff that is brought for a month! I am fortunate to be able to go home each night to sleep and have complete silence.....Carter and Jaden sure have some lungs!! However I do miss out on seeing those cute kids when they wake up in the morning! Audrey and I usually have a sleep over with just her and I. We go to dinner, then come home and watch a movie in bed and eat M&M's. The sad part is I usually end up falling asleep before she does!
I am sure we will spend most of the time at the beach, the mall and some great restaurants. Lisa takes in as much as she can from her favorites luxuries here in the "States", such as the mother's cry room at Nordstrom's, shopping at Target and eating at Island's and In-n-out. Apparently Canada lacks some of these luxuries! I am lucky to be able to take 2 weeks off when they are here!

I will have many stories once the gang arrives and will keep everyone up to date on our activities and all the funny stories.....until then, here are a couple of pictures from their past trips.

My Latest Obsession...BESIDES BLOGGING!!!!!

My latest obsession seems to be these cute hats. They aren't the typical baseball hat and not quite like a trucker hat, kinda of like a mixture of both. I don't know why I love them soo much, but I am obsessed. I bought two one day and then another the other day. I had three in my hand, but talked some sense in myself and only bought one. My obsessions seems to come in spurts, so I am scared to see what is going to come next. I am staying clear of the Nordstrom's half yearly sale because I walked out with 6 pairs of shoes last time! A girl can never have too many shoes, nor too many hats!!

Here are some of my other "obsessions" that I have gone through:

Beannies and socks...

Bathing suits and shoes...

Backpacks and purses...

I am sure there are more "obsessions" to come!

A Week Away From Work!

Joe and I took this week off...mainly just to get away from the absolute chaos that has been going on at work. Our plan was to do absolutely NOTHING but relax. I even cooked dinner that actually ended up tasting pretty good even though I burnt the heck out of the pan! We went down to San Diego for a couple of days. We went to Balboa Park which I had never been to. It was really neat. There is soo much to do there-museums, the zoo, walking and biking trails. We were kicking ourselves that we didn't bring our bikes! We went to the zoo on Wednesday. It was fun seeing all the animals. I have to say that I liked all the baby animals the best, even a baby warthog is soo cute! On Thursday we went to the Maritime museum. This is where they have all the ships that you can go on. You only have to pay $12 and can tour 5 ships. The ships we went on were the Star of India, the HMS Surprise (the ship that they filmed Master and Commander on), a Russian Submarine, the Berkley and another ship I can't remember the name of. It was really neat reading about the history of the ships and where they had been and who had been on them. The USS Midway is also right there. About a month ago we went and toured that aircraft carrier. It was so awesome. It was fun just to get away for a couple of days.

Well, the vacation is almost over and back to work we will go. Tonight we are going to meet my cousin's Hillary and Emily at Disneyland. I love going there! I could go there everyday! But with summer here, it will probably be pretty crowded with all the people around now that school is out. Oh well, I am just that I have a pass again and can come and go as I please! Going to the "happiest place on earth" is the best way to spend my last day of vacation!!

My attempt to cook dinner. I burnt the pan but it sure tasted good!

A baby wart hog and me feeding a baby goat.

Joe on the Star of India with the submarine, HMS Suprise and the Berkley in the background. We had to crawl through all these small holes in the submarine.

Tecate, Mexico House Build 6/2/07

Yesterday I went with Joe, Uncle Mike, Aunt Shauna, Hillary & Emily and 40 other people to Tecate, Mexico to build a home. We went through the organization "Corazon" (http://www.corazon.org/). We all paid $150 to pay for the supplies. The day started at 3:30 am when my alarm went off. I have to admit I was not happy to get up, but I just kept telling myself that what I was doing was worth it. We met my relatives at 5am in San Clemente and then headed down to San Diego to meet the rest of the group. From there, we caravanned our way to Mexico. Joe had never been before. He was holding on to his passport the whole trip saying how happy he was to be an American! I had been down there to paint a school when I was 17, so I knew what to expect as far as the living conditions, but for Joe, it was a whole new experience. We finally got to our location and it was basically after driving through an unpaved dirt road. We pulled up to an area that was sectioned off with barbed wire. There was a trailer, a container of water, a refrigerator, a washer/dryer, an outhouse, some toys and lots of dirt and cactus. In the middle of this was a foundation 16X20. This was where we would build this home. We were introduced to the Sanchez family-Lionel, Leslie and their cute son Elliot. They had been married for 5 years and have been living in their tiny trailer. The organization "Corazon" (means Heart in Spanish), gives back to families in Mexico that do things for others Mexican families. They were chosen and were soo excited to soon have their first home.

We were all told how the day would go, pretty much work until 12, break 30 mins and then work until we were done. We started by taking all the pieces of wood that would make up the walls of the home and painted them with primer. Shauna, Hillary, Emily and I painted alot of walls. Joe and Mike started on the more "manly" projects, such as building the frame for the home. Soon we were painting the exterior color of the home and then hammering those to the frame of the house. Next thing we knew, they were already putting the walls up. It was amazing how quickly we all got things done. By lunch break, we had put up all 4 walls, put up the frame of the roof and started to paint the interior.

Lunch was soon over and my favorite part began-putting the tile on a counter Joe had helped build. I had no clue how to do any tile work, but now I can honestly say that I could do it from start to finish. Joe would lay the tile adhesive and then we would place the pieces of tile. My new friend Lee (trip coordinator) taught me how to mix grout so that we could finish the counter tiles. I became quite the "grouter". It was soo much fun. I worked SOO hard on making it look perfect. I would inspect each tile to make sure there weren't any holes. I wanted this to be perfect for the family. We finally got to place the counter in the home and Lee told us to sign the bottom of it! He said that he had never seen a counter look that good! He said that it is very rare that he allows anyone to sign any part of the build, but he knew how proud we were of it!

Our signatures under the counter & Lee with his proud counter crew

Before we knew it, the home was done. We had a ceremony for the family and they wrote a letter to all of us that a translator read thanking us for all of our hard work. We then presented them with a paper that we framed that had all of our signatures on it. The most amazing part was when they handed them their "keys" to the door!! In Mexico, you will rarely see a door, let alone one with a lock. The mexican government does not prosecute anyone for going into another persons home and stealing because if your house or car are not locked, you are welcoming anyone in to do as they please. You should have seen the look on there face when they received those keys. Their son Elliot was soo excited to go up into the loft that was built for them to sleep in. He kept saying that it was all for himself!! The smile on his face was priceless and it is one of the moments I will never forget! It was sad to leave. As we drove away we could see their home from the road and it looked AWESOME!!

Getting their keys & admiring their counter!

Us with the Sanchez's & the view of the home from the road

On our way back to the border, we stopped at this AMAZING taco stand that had the BEST tacos. Now, I am not a taco lover, but I can say I would eat there everyday! The whole drive back I kept thinking about how grateful the Sanchez family was to have that home that basically had one room with a loft. There was no carpet, no lights, no couch, no TV, no phone, no heat or air conditioning, no stove, no bed, no bathroom, no shower, no closets...basically 4 walls and a roof. When I finally got home, I walked up to my home that had a porch light lit, stepped onto the carpet and turned on a total of 7 lights, sat on my couch and looked around at the the "material" items I have and thought about everything they did not have. I couldn't help but feel guilty and spoiled. Joe told me that no matter how bad things can get, there are always people that have it worse and that everyday I should be thankful for where I was born and how I live. I cannot wait to do something like this again. I actually helped changed someones life!! It has changed me! So, the next time I think to complain about my DVR not taping the show I wanted or my home being too small, I will think of the smile on Elliot's face as he sat up in his tiny little loft for the first time!

Elliot and his priceless smile in "HIS" loft!!
